The 13 Short Pieces for flute, viola and harp (1990) were written for the Danish Harp Trio, who premiered the work on August 2, 1990 at the Ebeltoft Festival. The inspiration for the material grew out of a fascination with the structures of the 20 basic amino acids, which I happened to read about while consulting an encyclopaedia. The music as such has nothing to do with amino acids, but is mainly dance-like in character, with excursions into the lyrically expressive. - One should perhaps think rather of haikus? The number 13 was deliberately chosen because of its magical aura. Besides, I was myself born on the 13th.
