Five composers with works at Edition·S are nominated for this year's Carl Prize

Morten Olsen is nominated for COMPOSER OF THE YEAR – large ensemble with the work The Heart of Darkness (2019), a concerto for solo violin and sinfonietta commissioned by Athelas Sinfonietta and premiered by solo violinist Anne Søe and Athelas Sinfonietta Copenhagen November 9th 2019 in KoncertKirken, Copenhagen. Allan Gravgaard Madsen is nominated in the category COMPOSER OF THE YEAR – large ensemble with the orchestral piece Nachtmusik (2019). The piece was commissioned the Danish National Symphony Orchestra and premiered by Duo Åstrand/Salo and the Danish National Symphony Orchestra conducted by Ryan Bancroft. Simon Steen-Andersen is nominated for TRIO in the category COMPOSER OF THE YEAR – large ensemble. TRIO is indeed a large ensemble piece. The piece was co-commissioned by the Danish National Symphony Orchestra and SWR and premiered by the SWR Symphony Orchestra, the SWR Big Band, and the SWR Choir alongside video material from the SWR archive. Martin Stauning is nominated for COMPOSER OF THE YEAR – small ensemble with the piece Stèle à Six Faces (2019) for violin, clarinet, cello, and piano. The piece was commissioned and premiered by Messiaen Quartet Copenhagen 29 March 2019 at Østerbro Koncertforening, Copenhagen.

Bára Gísladóttir is nominated in the category COMPOSER OF THE YEAR – small ensemble for her piece Music to accompany your sweet splatter dreams (2019) for piccolo flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn, trumpet, trombone, two percussionists, piano, and string quintet. The piece was commissioned by Klang Festival 2019 and premiered by Athelas Sinfonietta and Esbjerg Ensemble. Watch the premiere.

The Carl Prize was founded by Danish Music Publishers' Association in 2013, named after Carl Nielsen. Prizes are awarded to composers and songwriters in 14 different categories spanning different music genres. This year's ceremony has been postponed due to the corona crisis, but the winners will be announced on August 24th 2020.
