Celebrating female composers

2020-03-06
On occasion of The International Women’s Day, March 8th, we are celebrating female composers. At Edition·S, we find it important to strive for a more gender-balanced repertoire.

Recent attention to the repertoire reports, initiated by the Danish Composers' Society, Edition Wilhelm Hansen, Edition·S, and SNYK, was brought by the ensemble Lydenskab and their music video for a piece by Line Tjørnhøj Hjertet. The repertoire reports show that female composers are largely overlooked in Danish concert programmes where more than 95% of the works performed are written by men.

At Edition·S we are proud to include more and more works by female composers in our catalogue. We are striving for a more gender-balanced list of published works by female composers. The past four years, Edition·S has increased the percentage of works by female composers. During that period, Edition·S has published 392 works of which 17.6% was composed by women, an increase of 11.3% of the total amount of works in our catalogue. In January this year, over 50% of our published works were composed by women.

On the International Women's Day this Sunday, the piece Hånden på Hjertet by Line Tjørnhøj is premiered in celebration of the International Women's Day. Hånden på Hjertet reflects a mixture of statements from female voices touching upon the pressure of norms such as the drinking culture, body culture, sexuality, or other socially related challenges surrounding being a woman today. Read the interview here
