This work is thoroughly saturated with motives from Heinrich Isaac’s melody for the Danish folk song Nu hviler mark og enge (Now fields and meadows lie fallow); hence the title. There is also an allusion to the piano work Strofer og marker (Stanzas and fields) by <a Ib Nørholm, to whom the piece is dedicated.
In some sections the choral melody is treated roughly (The fields); in others more gently (The meadows). Tage Nielsen aimed at a certain entertaining and unrestrained ring, and consequently the work has been tagged Divertimento. But don’t be wrong: lurking just below the grotesque surface is gravity or even pain.
Marker og enge was composed in the year 1971 for Jesper Jørgen Jensen and was performed for the first time the following year at the Vor Frelser Church in Copenhagen
