The 'large-scale' but short Symphony No. 12 really tests the limits of the symphonic genre. The composition soon disintegrates into fragmentary episodes and comes to an unexpectedly abrupt end with the instruction "Amok! A composer explodes". The work is a challenging, autobiographical expression of powerlessness - beyond the 'permissible' and with no artistic safety net.
