This work is in one movement and runs for appr. 19 minutes. The title refers to a quote by Henry Miller. The material itself was extracted from a trouvéres melody (Chanterai pour mon courage/ I will sing to encourage myself). The melody consists of 12 nine-note phrases which have been transformed into 5x60 ”fields” through different manipulations that are alternately vertical and horizontal.
It is these ”fields” with which I compose rather freely. Thus the symphony contains five stages and a coda where the trouvéres melody is quoted in the solo cello. The individual ”fields” are increasingly coupled so that they are gradually mechanized, thereby losing their identity. This means: the more events at the same time, the more they are subordinated with each other (cf. the relationship between the individual and the surrounding society in the modern mass culture).
Thus the horizontal connection in time is created via couplings, overlaps, link technique (foreground/background) and echo/ pre-echo effects. Tonally each ”field” is centered around a focus note.
